Three Persons Along

Chief: Ksim X̱saan
Tribe: Raven
Carver: Ax̱ts’ip
Height: 40 feet
Year: circa 1860

Crest figures from top to bottom:

1. Person of Lizards
2. Person of Lizards
3. Person holding Flying Frog

Travelling down the river past Gitlax̱t’aamiks, the Three-Persons-Along pole stood fifth in line along the river front, in front of the Raven house called “Person on the Smoke Hole”, belonging to chief Ksim X̱̱saan. Cut down during the Christian religious revival at Gitlax̱t’aamiks in 1918, it was saved and later sold to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada where it stands today.

The lizard and Flying Frog crests on this pole were adopted by the Raven clan before the volcanic eruption in the Nass valley in the late 1700s. They represent creatures that lived in a shallow lake that existed immediately east of today’s village of Gitwinksihlkw. During the volcanic eruption, the lake was covered in lava and disappeared forever.

The lake was full of lizards and frogs, and the Flying Frog was a supernatural animal that was also said to live there. The Flying Frog is a crest of the Ravens, but it is also important to a story of the Wolf clan belonging to chief Nagwa’un.
