Education - Gingolx Aboriginal Head Start

Head Start Staff

  • Larisa Watts - Manager, Infant Toddler/ECE Licence
  • Patricia Angus - ECE Assistant, completing last ECE Online course through Northwest Community College
  • Sinobo Doolan (maternity leave) - ECE Assistant, currently working on AECE diploma online through the College of New Caledonia
  • Kim Stewart- Interim ECE Assistant, currently working on AECE diploma online through the College of New Caledonia

All Head Start staff have updated Child Care First Aid and other certificates that benefit their employment as caregivers.

The children leave on a happy note, most times not wanting to leave. We get down to the child's level and listen to them as we would adults.

Children learn by experience, hands on activities and through their senses. We encourage the children to problem solve and talk during snack/lunch times. This promotes language and confidence. We include Nisga'a language and culture into our programs. We all say the Nisga'a prayer along with the children before we eat together, go on field trips and do activities that relate to our cultural calendar.

We base our curriculum on children's interests and by what is expected from the school system as the children enter Elementary school. For example rhyming, colors, counting and writing their own name.

The Gingolx Head Start Day Care is offering the following programs:

Program: Head Start Services 0 - 3 and 3 - 6 years old

Objective: To provide a developmentally appropriate environment that promotes the health, safety, social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language development of each individual child that enters the program. We implement the Nisga'a Culture and Language development into our curriculum. Provide resources for parents and opportunities for parents to get new activity ideas to do with their children at home.

Hours: 9:00 am to 11:00 am (18 months to 3 years)

1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (3 to 4 years)

Mondays to Thursdays

Program: Day Care

Objective: Offer affordable licensed group care for the community of Gingolx. Provide a creative, safe, healthy, learning environment that promotes language, health, safety, social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child and families who need child care.

Hours: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (Monday to Friday)
